TAMPA–When social distancing comes to mind, most people only think about the disadvantages. I am not here to tell you there are none; there are certainly disadvantages, but there is also an upside.

What is Social Distancing?

According to a recent URMC article, (University of Rochester Medical Center), the definition of social distancing is “Social distancing means not interacting with anyone outside your household, and limiting trips to places where you might interact with other people.” It also says that “Minimizing contact with others is the best way to reduce the spread of COVID-19.”

Social distancing is how COVID-19 is going to stop spreading rapidly. Minimal interaction with others means less germs transfer between others. Some people could have the virus, but not have any symptoms. These people are called “Carriers”. The sooner we social distance, the sooner we get to interact with people without restrictions. If everyone does their part, and works together as a whole, the Coronavirus will go down in flames. The obvious downside to this is that no one gets to interact with each other.

Most countries are in lockdown. This means that you can not leave your neighborhood, unless you are on your way or way back from work, seeking medical care, or going to the grocery store. Otherwise, you are basically stuck in your neighborhood. The ‘silver lining’ in this is even though you are stuck at home, this leaves you with a lot of time on your hands. Lockdown and social distancing allows you to spend quality time with your family.

Another benefit of lots of free time is to get a pet like my family and I have done. When you are about to get a pet, the usual debate is whether you have time to be with your pet, and to care for it. Without the virus, everyone would be going to work and going about their business as normal. Moms and dads will be going to work, and kids will be at school, leaving nobody to care for the pet. However, with the virus, the whole family is home, so you can spend time with your pet.

Final Thoughts

So next time you think about social distancing, think about the benefits. The main reason we are social distancing is to stop the spread of COVID-19. By stopping this virus, we are saving the lives of others everyday. Furthermore, take a moment to recognize essential workers. Those are people that are still working in hospitals and grocery stores. They are in the places where COVID-19 is most likely to spread. They are putting their lives on the line to help others.
